Healthcare for International Students at The Bloomsbury Surgery
Moving to a new country to study is exciting, but it can also feel unfamiliar—especially when it comes to healthcare. At Bloomsbury Surgery, we are experienced in supporting international students and are here to help you feel confident accessing healthcare during your time in London.
Registering with us
International students are welcome to register with our practice, regardless of how long you are staying.
Our online registration process is quick and simple. We recommend registering as soon as you arrive so you can access care when you need it. (Please provide link)
Understanding NHS healthcare
The NHS (National Health Service) provides healthcare in the UK. Many services are free at the point of use, including GP (doctor) appointments.
If you have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa, you will usually be entitled to NHS care. Some services, such as prescriptions, dental care, and eye tests, may involve a charge.

How we support international students
We are used to working with students from a wide range of countries and healthcare systems. Our team will:
- Help you understand how the NHS works
- Provide clear explanations of your care and treatment options
- Support you in accessing specialist services if needed
- Offer preventive care to help you stay well during your studies
Common health needs
We regularly support international students with:
- Adjusting to a new environment and managing stress or homesickness
- Mental health support and wellbeing
- Sexual health and contraception
- Routine medical care and long-term conditions
- Vaccinations and health advice
Medication and ongoing conditions
If you have an existing medical condition, we recommend:
- Bringing a summary of your medical history
- Bringing enough medication to cover your first few weeks
- Booking an appointment soon after registering so we can continue your care
Confidentiality and privacy
All consultations are confidential. This means we will not share your information with anyone else (including family) without your permission, unless there is a serious concern about your safety.
Language and communication
If English is not your first language, we can arrange interpretation services for your appointments. Please let us know in advance if you need this support.
