DALS Interpreting Service?

What is the DALS interpreting service?

The DALS interpreting service provides trained interpreters to support people attending appointments arranged by GP practices or PCN services.

Having an interpreter means you can:

  • Explain how you are feeling
  • Understand what the clinician is telling you
  • Ask questions and feel confident about decisions being made about your health

Interpreters are professionals. They are there to support communication and they keep everything you say private and confidential.

What kind of support can I get?

For PCN arranged appointments, DALS can provide:

  • Interpreters for spoken languages
  • British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters
  • Lip speaking or Deafblind communication support
  • Support for face to face, phone or video appointments

The support will match the type of appointment you are having.

Do I need to arrange the interpreter myself?

No. You do not need to arrange this yourself. The service that organises your appointment is responsible for booking the interpreter. This might be your GP surgery or a PCN service contacting you directly.

What helps:

  • Let them know as early as possible that you need an interpreter
  • Tell them which language or type of communication support you need
  • If you feel comfortable bringing a friend or family member to translate, please let the person booking your appointment know

They will take care of the rest.
